This event is intended for attendees of BIG20: THE Celebration EventJoin us for a leisurely walk on the Saturday of ODL’s Celebration Weekend! This is a short walk downhill into the small Derbyshire town of Wirksworth, which is near ODL's base for the weekend. On route, we'll take some time to look at the outdoor exhibits at the National Stone Centre. This is an area of former quarries, which is now wooded and green. The walk to Wirksworth is there and back along the same route, a distance of approx 3 miles/ 5 kilometres in length with around 40 metres of ascent (on the return leg of the walk). Arriving in Wirksworth, there will be time to explore the town centre, or take a ride on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (a heritage railway).The National Stone Centre is a 40-acre site of formerly quarried landscape near Wirksworth and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Rock faces in the former quarries provide evidence of 330 million-year-old geology. There are also a number of interesting exhibits demonstrating different styles of drystone walling and other uses of stone in construction. The Stone Centre has a geology exhibition and café, open 10:00-16:00.Wirksworth is a small town, which originally made its money from lead mining, quarrying and textile manufacturing. It has an attractive town centre that features a number of pubs and cafés, as well as interesting old buildings and small shops. Wirksworth is the home of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, a heritage railway line operating both steam and diesel locomotives.
