Editorial exclusion policy

We list organisations offering genuine, safe support to LGBTQIA+ people. This page explains what we exclude, and why.

Why this matters

This directory is a signposting tool: it points you towards an organisation, and you still decide for yourself whether it's right for you before you get in touch. That only works if the pointer is honest. The LGBTQIA+ community faces real hostility right now, and the failure this policy exists to prevent is a simple one: someone being pointed to a group that wouldn't genuinely welcome or support them.

What we exclude

We exclude any organisation that promotes, offers, or is credibly reported to practise conversion therapy: any attempt to change, suppress, or 'cure' someone's sexual orientation or gender identity, sometimes marketed as 'counselling', 'pastoral support', 'prayer support', or 'life coaching'. We list organisations that serve or are inclusive of the whole LGBTQIA+ community. We exclude any organisation whose primary activity is campaigning against the inclusion, recognition, or rights of any part of that community — for example, campaigning to exclude trans or non-binary people from LGBTQIA+ spaces, services, or rights protections.

Our standard

We align our exclusion criteria with the UK's cross-professional-bodies Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy (the shared position of the UK's major counselling, psychotherapy and psychology professional bodies) and the criteria set out by the Ban Conversion Practices coalition. We use these as our public, citable standard, rather than making a judgement call ourselves case by case.

How this works in practice

Automation keeps the underlying data fresh, and automated checks screen every organisation against this policy. People make the judgement calls: anything uncertain is routed to a person before it appears, and we keep reviewing listings after they go live. If we're shown credible evidence that a listed organisation offers or promotes conversion practices, we remove the listing.

If you believe a listed organisation should not be here, use the report link on its listing page and tell us why. We review every report. If you believe your organisation has been wrongly excluded under this policy, email [email protected] and tell us why — we review every appeal personally.
