Hill Walk: 8 miles, 383m ascent. Autumn woods and fabulous views!Welcome to a new series of walks exploring the humps and bumps of the Central region! Humps are hills with more than 100 metres prominence, and bumps are bulges which protrude a little less. You can find out more about humps here. Expect one or two quips on the way round! The Clent Hills include Walton Hill, at 315m a prominent Hump. Our route begins at Nimmings Wood car park, from where we ascend gradually to the Four Stones viewpoint. The stones look like something from prehistoric times, but were actually erected in the 1750s by Lord Lyttleton of Hagley Hall. The view from here is outstanding on a clear day, particularly to the South West, all the way to the Malverns, Cotswolds and even the Brecon Beacons.Passing Clent Hill 309m, we descend then ascend the second of the main summits which is slightly higher, Walton Hill at 315m. This is our Hump for today! Walton Hill has fine views especially East towards the Birmingham skyline. Views continue as we follow the top of the ridge south to Calcot Hill, then take the track west.The woods here include fine, historic woodland and traditional species, particularly oaks, beech, birch and hazel, and a wide variety of fungi in autumn. You may see deer hiding in the woods too!Lunch stop is just over half way at the top of Clent village. Here, there is a grassy slope good for picnics, the Four Stones café and the Hill Tavern. We are 1 mile from the car park here, so if you wish to take a short cut back that is possible.In the afternoon, we tackle a bump. A gentle, ancient track takes us to Hagley, where we cross the main road and ascend Wychbury Hill, a bump. It is a fine bump with an obelisk on the top. There are prominent views back over Clent and across Worcestershire. This is a hill walk with good paths, totally 8 miles with 383m ascent. Find the route here.
