About this event

This activity is part of the BIG20 Celebration Event and is intended for those attending the weekend event. Spaces may be made available to those not attending the weekend event, subject to availability - please message the event leader. The planned route is about 28km (18 miles) and is split between off-road cycle trails and quiet country roads. Depending on weather conditions and the mood of the group, there will be options to make the day shorter or longer. We will meet at the Mount Cook Activity Centre and head off uphill on the High Peak Trail. Our route along the High Peak Trail (a disused railway) passes through stunning scenery in this beautiful part of the Peak District. We will leave the trail near Parwhich to undertake a well-earned long descent on minor roads. After this, a steep climb takes us to the pretty village of Bradbournne (puzzlingly described on their signage as 'doubly thankful') Where we will stop for lunch near the church. A further ascent takes us to Brassington and a refreshment stop at The Old Gate Inn. A  steep but short climb takes us out of the village on our return to the trail and a long steep descent back to Mount Cook. You will need a mountain bike, gravel bike or hybrid bike for this activity. Because the route is substantially off road, with some bumpy and gravely sections, it is not suitable for road bikes. Middleton Top Bike Hire Centre is temporarily closed at the time of writing. We have no information about when it will reopen. There are no other cycle hire options nearby, so you will need to bring your own bike (or borrow one) if you wish to take part in this activity. We will update this page and the main event Telegram chat when further information is available. This activity, doesn't require any technical mountain-biking experience. However, there are some steep uphill and downhill sections, so a reasonable level of fitness and cycling experience will be required. The pace will be leisurely, with plenty of stops for snacks and photography,
