About this event

Join us for a 10 mile autumnal walk through the Hidden Cheesden Valley—often described as "Greater Manchester's Forgotten Valley" and one of its best-kept secret spots.Once a bustling industrial hub, this peaceful, steep-sided valley was home to over 15 water-powered cotton and wool mills in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, nature has completely reclaimed the gorge, leaving behind atmospheric stone ruins, cascading waterfalls, and quiet trails tucked away in the countryside. The highlights of the walk will be:Starting from Bury and heading up toward the quiet moorlands above Bury.Exploring the overgrown, moss-covered stone ruins of Cheesden Lumb Mill (built in 1786) and its impressive wheel pit façade.Tracking the winding path of Cheesden Brook, passing hidden stone bridges, old mill lodges, and picturesque cascading waterfalls.Climbing up onto the surrounding hills for expansive panoramic views across the West Pennine Moors.Walking through steep-sided woodland trails with total elevation gains of around 422mThen after head to a local Bury pub for a post-walk drink!Key Details & Practicalities: Distance & Elevation: Approximately 10 miles with 422m total elevation gain. Conditions: Paths can become very muddy, boggy, and slippery after rain. Sturdy hiking boots are essential, and hiking poles are strongly advisable.
