About this event

Our route follows the winding Wear in places, and old railway lines in others. We pass a number of disused pits that have now been turned into a park and a nature reserve. There are stretches that are more suburban, and some roadside walking, but I have tried to keep this to a minimum. There is a little bit of ascent on this route (under 200 metres) and the route includes good surfaces in the main.  This walk starts at Finchale Priory, an English Heritage site. There will be time to visit the priory on our return, in case you wish to get your history fix.  We initially head towards Great Lumley. After around 1 1/2 hours of the walk, you will start to get some views of Lumley Castle (sadly not home to Joanna!).  We skirt parts of the golf course, before getting a better view after passing through Lumley Thicks (woodlands).   We then follow a shaded path towards Bournmoor, and on to Elba Park, where you can see an interesting sculpture commemorating the Wooden Wagonway. We pass close to Fence Houses, before continuing on to the Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve.  We walk on and pass Leamside, before we take a short loop through Cocken Woods and reconnect with the River Wear, back to our starting point. After the walk, there will be an opportunity for a drink at The Three Horseshoes, before we head home.Dogs: Well-behaved and under-control dogs are welcome at this event.Dogs should be kept on a lead whenever this is signposted, whenever we are in the vicinity of livestock, and at the event leader's request. If this event is fully booked: Please join the waiting list as people frequently drop out during the week before an event and you are likely to get a place on the walk. If this is your first OutdoorLads walk event: If this is your first event, we’ll make sure you feel welcome. Please check out the My First Event page, and don’t hesitate to drop me a message if you have questions or want to know more about this walk. Image credits:  All images are provided by the event leader.
