Fforest Fawr is a UNESCO Global Geopark is set within the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in south Wales. It sits to the West of the more famous central Beacons - it is less popular but no less dramatic than its neighbours. The peaks may not be as high but the views are just as spectacular, the routes as challenging and it benefits from being far quieter. The wild mountains and hidden valleys of the geopark are the result of nearly 500 million years of Earth history. This fascinating area contains evidence of ancient seas, mountain building and sea level and climate change scattered across a landscape that was shaped by the last ice age.Parking at the quieter Craig Cerrig-gleisiad parking area we start by exploring this often overlooked Nature Reserve. It is a dramatic glacial cwm, often nicknamed the "Eiger of the Beacons" for its steep, imposing north-facing cliffs. It is a haven for rare arctic-alpine plants and upland birds. We climb around the area to the peak of Fan Frynych (629) to take in the views across the whole Bannau Brycheiniog range. We then traverse across the top of the cliffs before crossing wild moorland to climb Fan Fawr (734) to take in views across to Corn Du and Pen y Fan We descend down towards Storey Arms. Depending on conditions and time we will either heading back to the reserve via Craig y Fro or along the Taff Trail. This is a tough walk in places - the ascent and descent of Fan Fawr can be steep and the area can feel more remote and isolated than its busier neighbours. However we start gently with a good warm up on Fran Frynach and we are rewarded with experiencing the quiet wilderness of this special area.There are excellent opportunities to try out your navigation skills on this walk - whatever your level.
