About this event
Join Alex for this 11-mile autumnal amble around assorted Ayots.We will meet at Welwyn North station and head southwest into the village of Digswell, dominated by a large viaduct carrying the East Coast Mainline across the valley of the River Mimram. We will pass the parish church of St John the Evangelist and Digswell Hall before entering Sherrardspark Wood, a large nature reserve on the edge of Welwyn Garden City.Here we will turn west through the small settlements of Ayot Green and Ayot Little Green and follow the Ayot Greenway, a disused railway line now used as a track for walkers and cyclists. We will skirt fields and woodlands as our route takes us northwest towards the village of Ayot St Lawrence.On arrival in the village we will pass Shaw's Corner, the home of the playwright George Bernard Shaw, author of Pygmalion and St Joan, and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. We will stop for lunch in the classical church of St Lawrence built in 1778 as a replacement for the 12th-century original.After lunch we will turn east, passing the ruins of the old church and heading out into more open countryside. Our route will take us through historic Welwyn, the original settlement of that name before the establishment of the much larger garden city in 1920, passing the parish church of St Mary the Virgin.On leaving Welwyn we will cross more farmland and woodland before arriving back at at station, which has a convenient pub just next door.Don't waste that space!Please only book if you know you can make it.
