About this event

Our 7 mile (11.2KM) walk takes in some of the finest Yorkshire Dales countryside. We will explore a picturesque and fairly quiet valley once famous for its lead mining. Walking through fields, pastures and woodland we will have time to stop and admire the classic Swaledale meadow landscapes with its many field barns (Coo Uses) used to house cattle and hay when they weren't routinely brought down to the farm in the winter.The walk takes us along Arkengarthdale, following Arkle Beck to Arkle Town, before crossing the river and walking back towards Reeth. There will be ample opportunity to appreciate the diverse nature of this narrow valley, its landscapes and it's wildlife we will encounter along the way. There are fantastic views of Fremington Edge, and Calver Hill on either side of the valley.  The area of Calver Hill has been inhabited since the Mesolithic period, when the nomadic population of this country were hunter/gatherers and this area was a rich source of food. Evidence of them being in this area include arrow heads and flint tools dating back over 6000BP.
